The Castro church or San Francis Temple,due to its extraordinary architectonic beauty,was declared National Monument in 1979. Its structure was completely executed with the local wood. Its construction dates back to 1910.

The work was directed by the superior of the convent of that period, P. Angel C. Subirare O.; the carpenters, all from Chiloe, were directed by Mr.Salvador Calixto Sierpe, from the Yutuy town.
The Church's structure was designed by the architect Mr. Eduardo Provasoli.

The Church's Architecture

The Style of the Temple is neo-gothic, with a rich interior ornamentation, especially the forms of its vault.

Construction Materials

For the construction of the Castro Church, local wood were used such as larch, cypress tree, tenío, coíhue and others called in Chiloé “red wood” that are of long duration.
The facade, the roof and the outside linings are from galvanized iron, the interior linings are from raulí and olivillo.
Castro Church dimensions is: 52 m in length for 27 m in width.
