In the place that today is occupied by the called Orange trees yard there have been erected irregular constructions that had nothing to do with the original structure.
These structures were demolished during their reconstruction.
The Moneda Palace has its principal facade facing the Moneda street, with views overlooking the Constitution Square , under which, parkings and offices were built for different departments of the presidency and the ministries that are located there. This place is popularly called The Bunker.
Behind its facade there are three small courtyards, one of which is roofed. The principal one, that serves as entrance hallway, is called Patio of the Cannons because there are two ancient colonial cannons located there.
Following its interior rooms, in direction to Alameda, we arrive to the renewed Orange trees yard, with trees that were planted at the beginning of the decade of 1980.It is here where the big ceremonies of the presidency take place such as celebrations of dinners in honour to distinguished visitors, discourses and ceremonies of different nature. It contains a little exposition of sculptures, among which it stands out one of Roberto Matta called Tolomirotomiro, that was part of the Chilean pavilion of the Universal Exposition of Seville in 1992.
It was during the president Ricardo Lagos's Government, that the work to link the Paseo Bulnes with the new Citizenry Square (Plaza de la Ciudadanía) was started. Under this one, there is a big cultural space called Cultural Center "The Moneda Palace", inaugurated in January 2006.
