Sewell began to be built and became populated in 1904, under William Braden's hand of the mining North American company Braden Copper Company .

Sewell's Origin

Braden Copper Co. was owner of the mineral deposit El Teniente .Sewel was built for its exploitation, that occurred in April 29, 1905, previously to the approval by the Treasury Department.
Sewell did not obtain this denomination until March 1915, when received its name in honour Barton Sewell, a top executive of Braden Copper Co. that supported faithfully the initiative in Chilean lands and that passed away that same year in New York.
In1916, 95% of Braden Copper Co. shares passed to Kennecott Corporation, which became a subsidiary of the former.

Nationalization of Copper

The State of Chile acquired in 1967 51 % of Braden Copper Co.shares in the context of the nationalization of copper, that ended in 1971. The same year, the Operation Valle started with the purpose of transferring Sewell’s inhabitants to Rancagua, since the Government could not assume the expenses of the camp any longer.

Sewell Nowadays

Sewell is currently CODELCO's property - Chile División El Teniente.
Arrangements to nominate Sewell as a candidate for the UNESCO World Heritage Site are being carried out.
