Santiago is located approximately in the coordinates 33° 26′ 16″ S 70° 39′ 01″ O, at an average height of 520 m.
In 2002, it had a population of 5428590 inhabitans, a figure that, according to the National Institute of Statistics, would reach the 6269629 inhabitans, What is equivalent to close to 40 % of the total population of the country. The city of Santiago houses the principal governmental (with the exception of National Congress, located in Valparaíso), financial, administrative, commercial and cultural organisms of the country.
